Reportable priority waste is generally hazardous by nature. It is a subset of priority waste and carries the highest levels of controls. This type of waste poses the greatest level of risk to human health and the environment.
Industry obligations
The duties and obligations associated with waste categories accumulate according to risk. You must manage your reportable priority waste by complying with both the industrial, and priority waste duties.
- You must use a permitted vehicle if you deposit, transport or receive reportable priority waste. This does not include waste tyres.
- You must use Waste Tracker to inform EPA each time your waste changes hands.
How to manage reportable priority waste

Follow the same process as managing priority waste. You will also need to comply with waste tracking duties.
To meet the waste duties, you must:
- classify your waste
- provide information regarding the waste to the next person in the supply chain
- report to EPA each time the waste is exchanged
- transport only in a permitted vehicle, except for waste tyres
- take reasonable steps to contain the waste to prevent escape or contamination
- isolate the waste to enable resource recovery to occur
- take reasonable steps to identify and assess alternatives to waste disposal.
Waste tracking
You must inform EPA every time a reportable priority waste is exchanged.
You must use EPA’s electronic waste tracker tool to comply with this duty.
Penalties
Mismanagement of reportable priority waste is a serious issue. Courts may impose a maximum penalty of 240 for an individual and 1200 penalty points for a business.
