The potential impacts from dredging in the lower Yarra River were assessed in 2007 as part of the Supplementary Environment Effects Statement (SEES) for the Channel Deepening Project. It concluded that dredging of contaminated material would not give rise to changes in contaminant concentrations in fish that would be of a concern to human health. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) sets out requirements for environmental monitoring. Amongst these requirements are nine Baywide Monitoring Programs that aim to detect changes to the Port Phillip Bay environment outside expected variability. The 2009 Lower Yarra River Fish Study is one of these. The objective of this study is 'to identify if the concentration of contaminants in fish tissue in the lower Yarra River after the dredging of contaminated sediments requires review of the current health advisory'.
