Water quality in the Barwon River has improved, according to Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) testing.

At Geelong the water quality is now suitable for swimming or other recreation uses like kayaking or boating, but there is some variability in different locations so use common sense and avoid water that is discoloured or odorous.

Water quality in the lower Barwon River estuary and at beaches near the mouth of the river including Ocean Grove Main Beach, are much improved and are suitable for swimming. Due to the recent flooding conditions, that may change quickly following rainfall or during low tides. It’s recommended to avoid areas with discoloured water and avoid all contact for at least 48 hours after heavy rains.
